“Psychometeorology”
A musical offering to the poet Caesar Emmanuel (1902-1970)

“Psychometeorology” is a collection of 8 Greek songs and 6 recitations on the poetry of Caesar Emmanuel, one of the most cultured and avant-guarde Greek poets of the mid-war years (1920-1940). A graduate of the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens, he worked as a translator of English, French and Italian for the insurance company “Athinaiki” and as a literary reporter for the French-speaking Rumanian newspaper “Le Moment”. He taught Greek literature at private schools in Athens up to 1958, and then in Cyprus and Egypt. He published 4 collections of his own poetry and 6 collections of translated poetry. Noteworthy among his numerous translations and adaptations of ancient Greek, French and English poets and authors is the translation of the entire work of Hippocrates into modern Greek, in 6 large volumes, which constituted – in 1971 – the second complete publication of this work worldwide.

Eight composers – some of whom are performing in their compositions – two vocalists and six musicians have contributed to the album, while five more persons have recited poetry at the accompaniment of music specially written for the occasion.

The poems chosen deal with different subjects. Some have a melancholic or critical disposition – characteristic of the poet’s time – others are full of tenderness and discretion. The musical style was inspired by the poetical content and the specific period, but it is also timeless and, in some cases, quite modern.

The album was released in September 2012 and is a production of Olga Emmanuel, dedicated to her uncle, Caesar, on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of his birth. Her own contribution to the CD is 4 songs and 2 melodies.

The pieces were presented at a special function dedicated to Caesar Emmanuel, which took place on Friday, September 28, 2012, in the building of the “Attica Tradition” Educational Foundation, in Plaka.
